Quincy Jones

30 May, 2009 (15:41) | Uncategorized | No comments

Quincy Jones is a cool cat. Saw him on BET with Chuck D. He has a lot of heart and it was nice to watch the interview and do a drawing. I actually found this in a sketchbook that I had totally forgotten about. Looked through it and found a bunch of stuff I has also forgotten. Will post some more sometime soon.

Tonights Drawing Experiment

8 April, 2009 (23:33) | Drawing | 1 comment

The first drawing took about forty five minutes and was done my usual way of sketching it out…. and then roughing in the value. Later in the evening I drew the second one from the first one but going about it in a totally different way. I didn’t  sketch at all I just went right for the value and forced myself to go fast. It was done in half the time. The second is not necessarily supposed to look just like the first. I was hoping that I would get something interesting out of it… not sure I did.  It’s not nearly as precise but I had fun doing it and when I experiment more I’ll post the results.

New Hand of Paul

31 March, 2009 (20:59) | 3D Model | No comments

A while back I had a friend tell me that someone he respected told him that he liked my models but that I should focus on the stronger work. He specifically said that I should ditch the hand from a very early post on this blog.  So I went back and looked at it and when you’re right…. you’re right! That was one of my earliest sculpts and looking at it today it shows.

So I did a new one!     …and posed it this time!

Cornell West Sketch

21 March, 2009 (03:59) | Uncategorized | 1 comment

Got out of work.  Went out.  Hung out with a cool girl and some dumb guys.  Drank slightly too much.  Came home.  Crashed Out. Woke up three hours later.  Decided sleep was lame,  and drew Cornell West.

Yeah doesn’t make a lot of sense to me either but it was a nice ending to a week that kind of sucked. Excited about tomorrow.

This is just quick sketch done very quickly. I really like Cornell. He makes me want to do more with myself. Click on it.

Mae Murray

17 March, 2009 (02:10) | Painting | 1 comment

This is a caricature of Mae Murray. She was  an early silent movie star, who later moved into sound. She was known for over the top costumes and in her day was quite famous. When I searched for Movie Star she came up. Painted mainly as an exercise I left it loose. You can read more about her here…  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mae_Murray

Quick Sketchbook Drawings

16 March, 2009 (22:53) | Drawing | No comments

These are some old drawings from a sketchbook I carry around with me. Most of these were done in bars, resteraunts , etc. They are very quick and unrefined but I kind of like them. These are my favorites from that particular book. I have a whole bunch of others though and I’ll post some more drawings as I scan them in.

Another Soldier Painting

25 January, 2009 (16:27) | Painting | 2 comments

Another soldier. Painted pretty quickly. I started it as an exercise one night. Finished up this afternoon. Working on a few different things in tandem lately which is kind of different for me. It seems to go in waves. Lots of drawings and paintings… or … lots of 3D stuff. This was inspired by a film callled A Very Long Engagement. It’s one of the characters from the film.

Blurry Woman

8 January, 2009 (18:05) | Uncategorized | 3 comments

I painted this at home a week or two before Christmas. I referenced part of it and then just painted away once I got the basic sketch in. Done entirely in Photoshop I tried to keep her really loose and just kind of infer shapes in her hair and legs. This kind of stuff is like therapy for me, and very different from what I’m asked to create at work. Comments and critique of any kind, are welcome as always.

Arm Study

8 January, 2009 (02:29) | 3D Model | No comments

This is an arm study I did recently. I’m pretty happy with the results overall. I may want to take if further at some point but I think I got what I wanted out of it for now. While sculpting some of the characters below I had some trouble understanding what was going on in different parts of the arm. Especially the forearm area.  I seemed to be able to understand it when I draw, but not when I went to actually sculpt the form. I referenced the arm from a wonderful maquette I bought at Siggraph which was sculpted by Andrew Cawrse. It’s the first time I’ve sculpted something anatomical, and the first time I’ve worked from an actual model sitting on my desk. I have to say I wish I had similar reference all the time. I really enjoyed it. I could feel that it made things a little bit easier to understand right away. Click the smaller images below if your interested in the progression.

Hipocratese.

22 December, 2008 (03:28) | Painting | No comments

I have really neglected the blog lately. I’ve been meaning to try and get this gallery plug-in together but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen in the near future. So just to keep things rolling I’ll keep posting images randomly and hopefully get something a bit more “collected” sometime soon. Basically the reason behind a gallery of some sort would be to allow for different collections of drawings or what have you that may have come from a particular sketch book or period in time. Anyway I’ll try and get that together sometime soon.

This is one I did of Hipocrates. I based it on a ruined statue of the famous figure that I found on line. If that statue is at all accurate he may have looked like this. I drew the sketch while I was waiting for someone who always seems to be late, and later painted it into it’s current form while waiting for that same person. I’ll post more images within the week I promise.

Another Model I finished a couple of months ago. I like this guy quite a bit. We’ll see if he holds up well over time. I added lots of closeups. People seem to like them. I think I’m going to post some more drawings next. Probably have some more work added this weekend.

Life Drawing = Anti Depressant

24 September, 2008 (21:39) | Uncategorized | 3 comments

More tough times. Environment in trouble. Economy’s taking a dive. Layoffs at work….   My response:   Life Drawing    :)

Well at least that was my response tonight. Had to break out of my funk. I tried to draw last night and it sucked. Spent all night awake and not feeling very well. Tonight I made some headway and I’m feeling 100 % better already.

Monkey Slave

22 September, 2008 (21:29) | Sculpture, 3D Model | 1 comment

So I’m going to be mixing up what I post these days. Usually this is where I dump my drawings and paintings and so forth but more and more I have been working on new models and I would rather post that kind so stuff than nothing at all. Part of the purpose of the blog was to make sure I was always working on something. Another idea is that it would force me to keep experimenting with new kinds of work. I’m happy to report that it has been some what of a success. So here’s some stills of one of the models I did for my reel.

couple of hours well spent

16 September, 2008 (02:12) | Painting | 1 comment

Things have been strange for a long time. Tonight I had a good phone call. Lost all interest in sleep, and spent a little bit of time painting this. I haven’t painted anything in what seems like ages. Very 3D centric these days, for better or for worse. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did making it.

Quick Notes

9 September, 2008 (12:03) | Uncategorized | No comments

Just a quick couple of notes today… I added a new page over there on the right hand side called paul’s demo reel. This isn’t for entertainment purposes at all. Just my current modeling demo reel that I recently put together. Please drop me a line and let me know if it’s slow or you have any trouble viewing it. I’ll also be udating it over the next couple of months, as I expect to have some new work finished here pretty soon.

I’m also scanning in some more drawings to add this weekend so there should be some new work to look at soon.

One other thing… if you haven’t yet click on the RSS feed at the top and use it to alert you to when there will fancy updates.  If your not familiar with what they do punch RSS feed into google and all will be revealed.

More Stuff Soon.

Foot Soldier

26 August, 2008 (01:53) | Sculpture, 3D Model | 2 comments

This was inspired partially by a film I saw a while back called A Very Long Engagement. He is a generic WWI French Soldier. It kind of evolved into a piece for my Reel so it probably doesn’t have the kind of character I originally intended for it due to the time constraints I put on myself, and the rush I was in to finish and move on to a lot of other ideas. ( more of that work to come ) He is the finished character that I spoke about on my timelapse movie below. Watching it now I think it’s pretty boring so I’m planning on doing something a bit more exciting to watch when I get some time.

Edit: These are low res for now until I get some better ones added in a few days.. . .

Fat Man

9 July, 2008 (21:47) | Drawing, Painting | 1 comment

Haven’t posted in too long for sure. It’s been a rough time. This is unfinished. It’s pretty close though. I started it a long time ago at the Macaroni Grill. Anyone who’s been there with me knows I have no problem drawing on the nice paper table cloth and then taking pieces of it that I like home.  Some work here and there and it will be complete. Working on a bunch of 3d stuff right now. Once I get that off my plate I’ll kill this one off. Probably less than a week before I’ll start posting some of the aforementioned 3d stuff. I’m excited about it though as there should be plenty to post over the next month or so. Click to make the small pic go big.

?uestlove painting… . . . .

24 May, 2008 (21:04) | Drawing, Painting | 5 comments

Many artists have taken a shot at ?uestlove here. This is my take. I meant to post this a long time ago but forgot about it for whatever reason. I’m a big fan of The Roots. I saw them play in Denver right after they released Things Fall Apart and it’s one of the best shows I have seen. Tiny old building with way too many people squeezed together. It was really warm, smokey, and totally diverse. I remember noticing that every kind of person was at the show and that made me feel really good. Common was their guest. It was his birthday and his father who some of you will know from his albums came on stage with a cake and we sang him happy birthday. Then they pushed the cake into his face and he threw it into the crowd. Laughter and smiles all around. I caught a mix CD which got destroyed and I have never been able to replace. ( All Hits, was the name if anyone can help ) The music was wonderful. I tend to like there earlier music a bit more than there new stuff. Nothing stays the same. He’s still “my drummer for life” .

Enjoy the painting. Many more posts to come. Click it to make it big as always. Paul.

Head Timelapse

24 May, 2008 (20:38) | Sculpture, 3D Model | 2 comments

This is a timelapse recording of a model I made recently. It’s part of a larger project that at this point isn’t finished. More on that to come another time. This shows me building up the forms and working out some of the detail around the face. I didn’t give him any hair yet on purpose until I’m ready to take the entire into it’s pose and give it some expression. This starts a little bit slow but picks up after the first couple of minutes. It doesn’t go all the way to completion and I may add a second part in a few days. It been too long since I have had the chance to post but I will now be back to my normal once or twice a week schedule so check in. I did a little introduction at the beginning and the tunes I used are by The Are.

Write comments, send messages, and feel free to share your opinion as usual.

500 +

17 April, 2008 (09:04) | message | 2 comments

The site went well over five hundred views yesterday. I think this number is actually quite remarkable considering a little over a month ago I sent a couple of emails to about thirty five people letting them know it was alive.

Never Erase will expand sometime in the near future. I will be interviewing a couple of artists and posting some animation as well as some more work as it is created. Please keep checking in, and thanks again for leaving comments and sending emails. - Paul

I sometimes snag photos off the internet that I find inspiring for one reason or another. I was going through a bunch of pictures a while back, and one inspired this painting. It’s kind of a caricature but I like how it came out. Comments and crit are welcome as usual.

Freestyle

25 February, 2008 (23:29) | Painting | 1 comment

So usually I have to look at something in order to draw or paint it. At least to get me started. It’s hard for me to go at a blank page and have any real success. Every now and then it pans out though… and then I get kind of excited. I painted this a couple of months ago and found it again while re-organizing some files. I think he’s got some style which seems to be lacking in a lot of stuff I do these days. I like the way it came out. Maybe I’ll do some more like it in the future. Straight out of my head.
